Slot Car Corner

Basement Preparation (Area 51)

The Scalextric Sport "Serpent" layout was torn down in April 2005 to make room for a new wood layout.  Planning for the new layout actually began in late December 2004 when I first contacted Brian Crosby at Ogilvie Custom Tracks.  Over the next couple of months, several layouts were evaluated and refined based on several design goals including:  1)  lane lengths of at least 120 feet, 2) equal or close to equal lane lengths, 3) accessibility to facilitate cleaning and marshaling and 4) a challenging layout which would place a premium on car setup and driver skill.  Brian was very helpful throughout this process making suggestions based on his experience as a track builder and slot car racer.  Because details of the layout were kept secret, other members of the Shoreline Model Raceways Club began referring to my basement of "Area 51" so I decided to go along with it.  The first set of pictures show the tables which supported the old Scalextric Sport layout being torn down.

One of the resident "aliens" keeping any eye on things...Andy disassembling the remaining tables...Most of the tables have now been removed. One more weekend of tearing down the "old" and we'll be ready to focus on the new track!

Next, the basement floor was cleaned and painted using special Rustoleum epoxy paint designed for this purpose.  The painted floor looks great but more importantly, cuts way down on the fine concrete dust which was always present previously.  If you have a concrete basement, this is a very worthwhile project.

Preparations for the new layout are nearing completion. The basement floor was painted with expoxy based paint - this will cut down on concrete dust and make it easier to clean.
